Handmade Goods For Sale!
Handmade Mart crafters will be selling perfect-for-gift-giving goods all day -- from hand-sewn clothing, cute jewelry, laptop sleeves, silk-screened posters and pottery, to cards, ornaments, and the cutest stocking-stuffers this side of the beltway.

Make Stuff!
The Pyramid Atlantic Art Center will be hosting an ornament-making workshop at their retail store, Art Spring (at the corner of Ellsworth Dr. & Georgia Ave.). Make tree toppers to take home, or hang yours up for all to see on the Silver Spring tree, during the official lighting at 5pm.

Buy Local Produce!
The FRESHFARM Market will have a host of local farmers selling fresh produce and other yummy goods.

From 10am-Noon, stop by the FRESHFARM area to meet Chef Pedro Matamoros from the new 8407 Kitchen Bar! Sample his mocktails made with apple cider and fresh ginger... yummmm!

Make it a full day in Downtown Silver Spring. Enjoy brunch and dinner from one of the many fantastic, family-friendly restaurants near the fair. Some of our favorite restaurants include McGinty's Public House, Thai at Silver Spring and Red Rock Canyon Grill.

What is your craft all about?
My work is all about reusing materials and finding new uses for things. All of craftgasm's paper products are made with maps and other bits that were on their way to (or fished from) the recycling bin, including the cardstock and the envelopes. I love looking at a scrap of reclaimed paper and editing it to decide how it could be best showcased for a notecard, or deciding that it would make a better envelope. Because everything is thus sourced, each of my items, while similar to each other, are one-of-a-kind.

How did you get started in your craft?
I started making stationery because I wasn't finding what I wanted to buy - especially a few years ago, when it was harder to find snark and irreverence in stationery products. Since I mail a letter or note a few times a week, I started making my own sayings with rubber alphabet stamps. That took forever, so now I have an awesome vintage Electra cursive typewriter to write funny things.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I love picturing craftgasm creations being hand-delivered by postal carriers and brightening someone's mood. It's one of the best feelings to find a hand-addressed envelope among your bills, and to be able to recognize the sender from the handwriting is delightful. I firmly believe there'd be less violence in this world if everyone wrote and received a letter a day.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
I'm really excited about my new stamped map notecard sets. I designed and carved the stamps myself, then stamped them onto reclaimed map cards. I have a globe stamp and a bicycle stamp so far from which to choose!

What inspires you to make what you make?
I am inspired to create by my customers, friends and family and cheesy as it may be. Through talking with customer, seeing their energy, and doing customer orders I am continuously changing the products that I am creating. When working with brides I might use a stone, chain, or metal that I have not previously used and it will lead into a whole new collection. I really enjoy creating items that others are thrilled to find and excited to incorporate into their wardrobes.

How did you get started in your craft?
I have been making jewelry in some form since I was about 10. My best friend at the time and I had a business making bookmarks and earrings. Needless to say it never went anywhere and I moved onto other things. Late in high school I took metal smithing classes at a local art school and fell in love. I then moved onto college and never managed to work bench classes into my schedule. After graduation, and a few different jobs, I found myself going back to making items for myself and my friends. It was something to do at night that had nothing to do with anything else that might be going on. I find relaxation in the repetition that is required in my work, be is sewing or metal smithing.

What is your favorite piece/product that you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
Currently I am really enjoying layering, mixing and matching my necklaces. Different colors, textures, and patterns. So I do not have one specific piece as much as a style that I am excited about. Much like a charm bracelet, I like for my necklaces to have a story and all work well together. My Grandmother always had the same gold necklaces around her neck, always. All different lengths and styles, all with different stories. I can remember how regal and beautiful they always looked and she is my inspiration for these pieces.

What is your craft all about?
My craft is all about fun accessories – everyday embellishments to brighten your day. I’ve been experimenting with fiber, most recently creating a line of knit and crocheted chainlink necklaces. I also started to make feather headpieces. Plus I use my trusty button maker to make magnets and pins my boyfriend and I design either on the computer or from found objects.

How did you get started in your craft?
I taught myself to knit a few years ago from books and YouTube videos while I was living in Boston. I made craft-minded friends who encouraged my new-found interest in fibers. We had knit/crochet get togethers called “Knitting Avengers” which I have since started here in D.C.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
Most definitely my handknit chainlink necklaces. I had to make chains and chains of I-Cord and I’m really proud of the end product.

What is your craft all about?
I design and knit hats, scarves, laptop sleeves, wallets, purses, gift boxes, and jewelries with marble stones and colorful recycled papers.

How did you get started in your craft?
I taught myself how to knit last summer but I've always painted, designed, and made clothes here and there. I once made a collection of clothes out of leaves only and participated in a fahsion show with it.

What inspires you to make what you make?
Colors. Multicolored yarns and stuff. Colorful handmade products are for sure give you happiness and less stress.

Where has your craft taken you?
I've been able to let others see my work domestically and internationally at arts and crafts fairs, markets, online shops, and I've made so many awesome friends. I'm very happy to be where I'm now and to be doing what I've always loved to do. I hope to continue growing.

What is your craft all about?

Generally, we make stuff for kids and those who love them. From reusable snack bags and napkins made from vintage fabric, to baby barrettes and toddler bows, to personalized burp cloths and diaper totes - we've got gifts covered.

What inspires you to make what you make?

We're inspired by beautiful ribbons, fabulous vintage fabrics, and tins of colorful buttons. The ideas and designs for most of our products are born from our own needs and wants. We have kids in our lives who need hair clips and cute diaper bags, we want to pack eco-friendly lunches, and set stylish tables.

Where has your craft taken you?

Really, our craft has taken us back home. We're a three woman operation - a mother, daughter, daughter team. We live in three different states and, like everyone else, we have lives that are crazy with family and work obligations. The best thing about our little business is that we get to slow down a bit and reconnect with each other while crafting.

How did you get started in your craft?
Do you mean when did I start putting price tags on the crap I make? I think it can fairly be traced back to a yard sale I had one dead of winter in the late 70s at age—I don’t know—nine? I’m pretty sure that’s where I caught the bug. In the corner of the photo you can see a large grocery bag; in it were “paper cameras” (???) that I woke up at the crack of dawn to fold in preparation for the big sale. Total sales for the day? $0.00!

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
I hesitate to declare any one product my “favorite.” And this is not out of some sort of precious notion regarding equal and unconditional motherly love for all of my products, but mainly just because I’m afraid I’ll put some sort of hex on it. Last year I declared the crack rock earrings my favorite and BAM! Didn’t sell one pair. At Crafty Bastards this year I said my favorite was the Meat Mint. Same thing. So forget it!

Where has your craft taken you?
Well, it’s taken me to Adams Morgan a couple of times, and Silver Spring. Although, I went to high school in Silver Spring, and so I guess it really hasn’t taken me anywhere. This May, though, it’s going to take me to London. The plan is to bring a couple of Fetus Cookie Cutters with me when I fly over to see The Stooges. I figure that if I give Iggy a cutter, I can write off the damn whole trip (whatever that means).

I’ve currently got a few things in some shops around town, and a website through which one could purchase something if so inclined. Soon, though, look for Hogmalion & Company on stage at the Hammersmith Apollo Theatre in London!

Vendor Q&A with imoM

What is your craft all about? imoM is built around the artwork of our father, Ming Yen Hsu. He had a very unique style - it was very childlike and minimalist, and it matched his outlook on life. He was a thoughtful, deep person who enjoyed art and was intrigued by nature, religion, science and medicine. His work includes a dazzling array of original watercolors, pastels and paper collages.

With the imoM shop, we basically present adaptations and prints of his artwork in the form of 4x6 greeting cards, 11x14 posters that can be framed on the wall, as well as various kinds of jewelry inspired by his artwork!

How did you get started in your craft?
For a long time, we talked to our father about one day making prints of his artwork so he could share it with more people, instead of having it remain tucked away in his basement studio. When he died in 2007 after almost a life-long battle with a recurring brain tumor, it was a kick in the pants to really get his artwork out there the way he always wanted. After our sister-in-law started making jewelry inspired by his artwork, we all started thinking more creatively about how to adapt his artwork in other ways than just print.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart? I don't have a favorite because they are so varied, but the vivid, lively and colorful ones are the ones that jump out most at me. There are certain prints that are most popular but there is always something for everyone. The cards are perfect to send for the holidays, or as gifts, and a lot of people also frame their cards in sets, instead of actually sending them as cards.

Vendor Q&A with Merina Art Glass and Jewelry

What is your craft all about?
My craft is kiln-formed glass, also known as fused glass. It’s a medium that dates back thousands of years to the Mesopotamians and then Romans. In this medium, you use the heat of a kiln to fire, fuse, and shape the glass.

How did you get started in your craft?
I began as a jewelry artist, working with beads and stones, and silver. But I began to hear about fused glass and loved the look of it. I took my first glass fusing class five years ago and was instantly hooked.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I love the beauty and versatility of glass and the fact that it comes in so many forms—powder, sheet, crushed, pulled—and I find myself drawing in it, carving it, molding it, shaping it. I’m inspired by abstract forms, tribal markings, and patterns in nature and I love vibrant colors. And glass challenges you because it moves, shifts, reacts, even changes color. I love that and find in my sculptures, vessels and jewelry, that I’m constantly searching for a new technique or language in my work so I can distinguish it from others.

What techniques do you use?
I sandblast, draw with glassline pen, cut, carve, even mold the glass. I also fuse, and tack-fuse the glass. I like dichroic glass but am challenged to use it differently.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
I plan to have some new pieces inspired by tribal art and tattoos and my own blackwork.

Where has your craft taken you?
I’ve been so lucky to learn from some incredible artists. They’ve taught me not to be afraid of color, rough edges, and abstracts. It’s an entirely new way of looking at the world around me. So much fun!

What is your craft all about?
Babus is all about natural, vibrant and safe(!) baby and kids toys. Wool yarn is my primary ingredient, but I also use organic cotton and reclaimed fabrics. I love making things that bring immediate smiles.

How did you get started in your craft?
A car accident! My mother taught me how to knit over the phone, from Takoma Park, MD to San Francisco, while I was recovering. I was instantly addicted.

What inspires you to make what you make?
My son, Nicholas, as he grows. Also, my love of nature, animals and color.

What inspires you to make what you make? I am striving to be more self-sufficient so when i start thinking about something i'd like to have, i try to figure out a way to make it myself. i'm sure that this desire comes from my grandparents, they were able to create almost everything that they needed from clothing to cabinets and everything in between. their way of life is a great source of inspiration.

What techniques do you use?
I sew squares and triangles together...and sometimes a curve or two. what is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the handmade mart?the wall pillows! they're sort of new and fun to make. this one is a personal fave. there are some other new items in the works as well...they might make their debut at the handmade mart.

How did you get started in your craft?
I get really nostalgic around Christmas time because that’s how Pretty Little Fings came to be. I started making plush for friends and family a couple of years ago for the holiday season and the love of making/crafting just stuck with me.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I get inspired very easily (food, children‘s books, nature, and even cartoons)! My main source of inspiration comes from the little boy that I nanny. I started making plush sticks because he loved collecting sticks so much!

My favorite piece that will be available at Holiday Handmade Mart is Rudolph the Red Nosed Bacon ornament. Every part of the ornament is hand stitched and will be super adorable on your Christmas tree!

How did you get started in your craft?
My dad told me to stop playing video games and do something productive...

What inspires you to make what you make?
I'm all about watching the Animal Channel and daydreaming. Almost all of the products we create revolve around animals and fantasy. Most recently our major theme has been "When Animals Attack!!" followed by the response "When Humans Strike Back!"

What is your favorite piece/product that you will bring to the show?
I'm very excited about releasing our new cardigan "Bad Hare Day" at the show.

Where has craft taken you?
So far Sharp Shirter has taken me into the basement of my parent's house :) I just graduated from college and am trying to make this thing into a full-time career.

Vendor Q&A with 8th Street Soap Kitchen

What is your craft all about?
Honest and good soap, unexpected combinations, fun names, imperfect drawings.

What inspires you to make what you make?
Pretty much anything -- a place, a person, a feeling. I joke sometimes that other people blog; I make soap. You know how they say that smell is the sense tied most closely to human memory? That totally makes sense to me.

More generally speaking, I'm constantly blown away by the number of talented people out there making cool things that are undeniably unique to them. And not just in the crafty-sphere (don't get me started -- where to begin?). People like Maira Kalman, Pez, Ed Emberly, that guy who makes clear-tape sculpture, Arthur Ganson, Sam Bartlett, Stephan Sagmeister, Diane Arbus, Drew, Julia Lohmann, Saul Bass, the folks at Yee-Haw, to name a few. Even the visual merchandising folk at Anthropologie. Totally adore their work.

What techniques do you use? I make soaps using the cold-process technique. In a nutshell, it means I make soap from scratch (as opposed to buying premade soap and melting it down), which takes a few weeks to cure. The "cold" refers to the fact the combination of fatty acids (oils) and alkali kicks off a chemical reaction that generates its own heat. Like up to 200 degrees -- soapmaking is not for the faint of heart.

Where has your craft taken you?
Geographically, I've gone as far as Baltimore. And as far as the wild land known as Northern Virginia.

Where can folks find your craft outside the Handmade Mart? My soaps are not sold at any brick-and-mortar shops -- I only sell at craft fairs and online at Etsy.

How did you get started in your craft?
My mom taught me to knit when I was 5 years old - so long ago! I made a few hats and scarves and put it away until grad school when I needed to do something with my hands outside of schoolwork. A friend and I got pulled into dyeing after playing with kool-aid yarn dyeing (it actually works well!) and the spinning our own yarns came along soon after!

What inspires you to make what you make?
Color is my inspiration! Playing with different colors, seeing how they look in the yarn and in the final product - it's always a surprise to see how things turn out!

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
I've been obsessed with knitting mitts this fall! They are fast and fun and great to keep your wrists warm with this in-between weather we've been having! I'll have tons of mitts at the Handmade Mart, and even patterns and kits for those wanting to make their own!

What is your craft all about?
Printlike offers thoughtful and clever screenprinted tees, textiles, and field bags, as well as letterpress cards and ephemera.

Where has your craft taken you?
I put my custom printing business on hiatus in 2007 while I attended school in Austin, Texas. I recently returned home to DC to launch Printlike and continue churning out fun handprinted goods. What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
I have a new series called Specific Souvenir that commemorates the forgotten, extinct, overlooked, or trivial things and places unique to D.C. It’s meant to inspire local pride beyond what the museums and marble monuments are about. My work has always involved off-kilter nostalgia—from retro graphics about hair-dos to archaic printing techniques. Now I’m applying that nostalgia to this place as I get reacquainted with my hometown.

What inspires you to make what you make? I’m inspired whenever the ordinary or mundane can be shown in a new or different light. I like the challenge of turning something generic like a souvenir tee or postcard into a more meaningful and specific thing.

How did you get started in your craft?
I had tried knitting when I was younger and somehow everything I made turned into a big knot. I gave up and didn't start again until I was a sophomore in college. I was staying at a friend's for Christmas and one night, she had a dream that we were knitting together in front of a fireplace. The next morning, she had her mom teach me how to knit. I didn't stop knitting until I had finished the ball, ending up with a holey, uneven dishtowel, that I gifted to my grandfather. I have been knitting ever since.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I am inspired by the yarn. Most time, when I see a skein of yarn I will know what it wants to be almost immediately. When I cannot think of what to make next, I like to flip through a stitchionary, a new lace or color pattern really helps me get re-excited.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
My favorite current piece is the ghost bag. It was my first freehand embroidery effort and I am really happy with how adorable it turned out.

What is your craft all about?
I love creating items that are inspired by my travels. I try to interpret them through functional or decorative items that surprise or inspire people.

How did you get started in your craft? I couldn't find an occupation that satisfies my love for travel, having my own time and creating my own designs. I discovered the world of crafts through the Norfolk Craft Mafia now called 7 Cities Crafters. That is when it all started.

What inspires you to make what you make? Simply the happiness that I experience and the possibilities of that happiness to repeat itself over and over again.

How did you get started in your craft?
Needing an outlet for the work that my day job as an illustrator rarely allowed for.

What inspires you to make what you make?
Sitting on the floor of the corner drug store next to the comic book spinner rack at the age of 5. Sitting on the couch in our den at 2:00 in the morning, watching the late nite B-movie double bill creature feature at the age of 10. Sitting in study hall during high school, instead of doing home work, working in my sketch book on my latest visual diversion at the age of 15.

What techniques do you use? We start out with pen, brush, black ink and a piece of paper. We finish the drawing in the computer. Then screen print the shirts in our subterranean super secret headquarters located somewhere along the Mid-Atlantic Seaboard.

How did you get started in your craft?
Last Christmas, I was trying to come up with gift ideas for my friends and family that I could make myself. I had taken a really adorable photo of my best friend's dog and I started playing around with it in Photoshop to see if I could make it into something fabulous that I could print on note cards for her. That snapshot became the first FuzzyMug and it snowballed from there. Everyone loved their custom Christmas gifts and showed them off to friends, family and co-workers. Next thing I knew, the orders started coming in.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I grew up in a household filled with pets and have always felt a special connection to animals. My own motley crew of furry ones (3 dogs and 4 cats) are always giving me new ideas for greeting cards and portrait options. Most of all, I love the process of working on a portrait with a client because they get so excited about it and I can really tell how much they adore their furry critters. Knowing that there are so many good people out there who care so much for their pets - that's truly inspiring!

What is your craft all about? I make hand-bound journals and sketch/art books from exotic and recycled papers, leather, and wood. Lately, I have also been incorporating gocco and letterpress prints.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I am inspired by robots, etymology, bibliophilia, improbable inventions, unusual interactions, imaginary maps, curiosity cabinets, and deciphering codes.

What techniques do you use? For me, book becomes art when its creation has purpose, and when its design incorporates content in the form of images, text, and architectural components. Each component can be used alone or in concert to convey a message. I also enjoy inventing hybrid books that combine common binding styles into a brand new way to capture your thoughts in a journal.

What is your craft all about?
It is all about expression, a way to say things without words. I am an initially quiet person until I get to know people, which others can mistake for shyness. It's always amazing to see how people respond to an individual piece. I think that's why I love doing mostly one-of-a-kind work, it enables me to relate on a very specific level and understand who my customers are.

How did you get started in your craft?
I am originally a painter. Raising two boys, I don't often find the time necessary to immerse myself in painting. Crafting has helped channel another creative outlet for me. In my studio now, I can stop and start a lot easier, which enables me to work in 20 minute chunks of time if that's all I can get. It's too difficult to do that when painting.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I think much of my inspiration comes through genetics! My great-uncle was a Philadelphia jeweler, so jewelry was a very expressive thing on my father's side of the family. Pieces of jewelry were my Dad's love letters to my Mom. My mother loved to sew as a hobby. She was also very fashionable and had a great eye for details. She worked on the business end of a clothing design company, so I learned a lot of little tidbits that have really helped me along the way. Every person in my family creates with their hands...I could imagine no other way of life!

What techniques do you use?
I do love the sewing bits! It is very simple and honest as a process. Plus, it allows you to undo or alter a piece, so as time changes so can the function or appearance of your accessory. Maybe that idea comes from reading all of those gothic romances (I am a bookworm!), where the women were always reworking their gowns, lending and borrowing bits from others. Beautiful things don't have to be new all the time and then seemingly die when they are deemed outdated...they can evolve. I think women today are moving back toward that idea.

What is your favorite piece...?
My favorite piece that will be with me at the Handmade Mart is my sea anemone ring. It is made from a golden beaded tassel off of a vintage dress. My neighbor collects vintage pretties and he gave me a box of old dress trimmings and beads. I wrapped the tassel with 14kt gold filled wire and fitted it as a ring. People just love to try it on...it looks like fireworks on your finger! It has a lot of movement, which I absolutely love in a piece of jewelry.

Where has your craft taken you?
It's been an amazing creative journey, this past year or so. A couple years ago, I never would have guessed I'd be doing what I am now. But in looking back at my family history and my own life experiences - it makes complete sense!

What is your craft all about?
Letterpress printing has been around for centuries, but it's enjoying a renaissance because anything printed this way looks wonderful. The type presses into the paper leaving a great tactile impression. I like the contradiction of using this fusty old-fashioned technology to make sometimes irreverent or flirty notes.

What inspires you to make what you make? I like to make things that I would enjoy using. Postcards to send for no reason, calling cards to give somebody cute my number, fun paper to wrap presents in. It makes those objects more fun by putting a more personal, handmade spin on them and recalling an era when people put more thought into correspondence and other social interactions.

What techniques do you use?
I use vintage metal and wood type and newfangled photopolymer technology to design my letterpressed items. Then I print each one by hand on Vandercook and Chandler & Price printing presses at Pyramid Atlantic.

What is your craft all about?
It's about taking discarded leather materials already in our environment and re-purposing them into functional, wearable art.

How did you get started in your craft?
Well, I bought a motorcycle and decided I needed something to fill that void between your glove and the bottom of the sleeve. I found a really cool old belt and made a cuff out of it. Once my friends saw it they all had to have one too. I've had a real passion for making them since.

Where has your craft taken you?
The sky is the limit with my craft. I continue to expand my retail base as well as craft festivals on the weekends.

What is your craft all about?
Our crafting entails a plethora of things including screen-printing (shirts, hoodies, zip-ups), sewing (plush fuzzies!) and button-making. Unlike a majority of our competitors, we keep everything in-house which probably accounts for our lack of sleep and resulting narcolepsy.

How did you get started in your craft?
We're big into the 'stache theme and at the time it was really an untapped and forgotten market. We decided to try our luck in the tshirt game and purchased a 4-color / 2-station screen-printer to save on some overhead costs. After hours of practice and plastisol ink fights, we tested our acquired skills on some tees and the rest is history. Since then though, we've transitioned to a number of garments, as well as branched out into the sewing game.

What inspires you to make what you make?
We find inspiration in many of the artists we meet at craft shows. Fuzzy Ink is the amalgamation of three distinct personalities, each sharing a passion for obscurely unique and creative forms of art. A lot of the crafters we meet at shows share this quality and it's great to see their personal takes on artistic innovation within a variety of mediums.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart? We each have varying tastes regarding graphic design and styles, but the one product we offer that typically gets the biggest reaction is our Monster Fuzzie (our roughly 4' wide oversized plush mustache). Unveiled at Indie Craft Experience '09 in Atlanta, this beast has been the recipient of thousands of pets, snuggles and loving squeezes. We hope the Maryland crowd will provide the same warm embrace.

Where has your craft taken you?
Fuzzy Ink has taken us literally all over the country this year. Based out of Raleigh, NC, we've had shows in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, Brooklyn, D.C. and Atlanta. We're hopeful for some transatlantic endeavors in the future.

What is your craft all about?
For me, pottery is about discovering beauty in both classical flowing contours, and organic shapes and surfaces. Playing with the clay - even to make a simple bowl or cup - is about feeling the clay and responding to it, as if it's an extension of your hands. It's a good feeling.

What inspires you to make what you make?
Some of my inspiration comes from things I observe in nature - lava flows or treebark or insects. But I also like to keep some aspect of functionality in everything, and sometimes a bowl is just a bowl. And there are many potters out there with such creative minds, they are always a source of steady inspiration too.

How did you get started in your craft?
I made the jump to jewelry a little over a year ago. My initial
inspiration came from a cheap necklace when the "metal" paint started
to come off. I decided to make a solid metal version myself and got
completely hooked. I started out at the library studying all the books
I could find on the subject and began developing my technique.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I craft in the spirit of my grandmother Zelma. She fled her farm in Latvia during World War II and lived in a refuge camp in Germany for several years. During that time, she had no choice but to be resourceful. There’s an amazing picture of my mother in Germany as a toddler wearing a beautiful dress crafted from a men’s plaid coat. My grandmother taught me the importance of recycling and that pretty things can come from the most unexpected materials.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart? My fabric boa scarves make me happy. They’re dramatic, fun to wear, and made entirely of reclaimed fabrics. I love to put together random colors and textures. Each scarf is truly a unique creation.

What is your craft all about?
DC based artist Mary Ellen Doran has developed a unique line of hand linked chains and gemstone jewelry. There are many variations in size and design of the chains. Some chains contain links that are as small as 6 to one inch and some are made from links measuring larger than two inchs each. This link style has been incorporated in bracelet and earring designs where high quality gemstones are utilized for spectacular individual pieces.

How did you get started in your craft?
I come from a long line of crafters. My paternal grandfather turned wood, my maternal grandmother and all her sisters knitted and/or crocheted; my father worked in stained glass for years, designed his own latch hook rugs, and is currently making rosaries; my mother has always been into textiles – sewing, stitching, etc. she currently crochets lap blankets for hospices. As a child we were pulled out of school every Fall for three weeks to travel to a huge artisan show in Gatlinburg, TN where I fell in love with Craft – master woodworkers, glass blowers, ceramicists, and the like laid down a foundation in my soul. So when I found myself a stay-at-home mom, taking time off from my graphic design career, I had to find a non-toxic, easy clean up craft (which was not my norm) – so I started studying and playing around with jewelry concentrating on chain making. Months later I found myself with a new chain design that I was satisfied with and a low budget to get more supplies so I started selling stuff to my friends to feed my habit. The habit keeps growing and thankfully so has the support. Today, I look to my foundations of watching the Masters and strive for the highest quality possible in each piece I produce. I hope that those that buy my chains will be wearing them and enjoying them 10 or more years from now.

What inspires you to make what you make? I believe to understand your art you have to understand the roots from where it comes. So I read books and visit exhibits in art, art history, craft, and jewelry design on a regular basis to see what has been done before and use that to try to produce something new and exciting. My most recent research has been on the sterling silver designs of tribes in China in the 18th and 19th century. I also watch and read about the current design trends to see what contemporary artists are producing.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
My craft started to get too “pretty” for me. So for the past year, I have been working on pieces that have rough edges and a little more weight to them. I wanted to provide a big splash of monochromatic color without relying on one single bead. I am very pleased with the current results in the horizontal “Wrapped” neck pieces and matching vertical earrings. I take tiny top-end gemstones and create a mass of color. The dance of light produced by the hundreds of facets in the tiny stones shows off these beautiful natural colors – but in a much more edgy and a bit more dramatic way.

How did you get started in your craft?
I've been involved in some aspect of fiber crafts almost my whole life, beginning when my great-grandmother taught me to crochet when I was just three years old! She owned a spinning wheel that had belonged to her grandmother, and I remember being fascinated by it when I was small. I eventually inherited it, and while it isn't spinnable, it inspired my desire to spin and master the process of raw fiber to finished product.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I believe my desire to create with fiber is inborn. I'm fascinated by the process and the possibilities. While I draw the colors and forms of the natural world for inspiration, the excitement of designing and creating something new and bringing various ideas and techniques together keeps me passionate about the things I create.

What techniques do you use?
I'm a handspinner, creating both 'regular' and 'art' yarns. I also knit, crochet, weave, dye, felt and sew, and love to combine various techniques in one piece.

How did you get started in your craft?

How did you get started in your craft?

How did you get started in your craft?
I've been sewing by hand for as long as I can remember. My first project was a little purse out of scrap fabric. My mom explained to me how to make the buttonhole slightly wider than the button, and my love of a needle and thread has not waned since. My mom also taught me how to use a sewing machine and I use both interchangeably. Although I have a master's degree in photography, I keep coming back to more traditional crafts.

What inspires you to make what you make?
The Lemon Cadet designs are inspired by things outside and the silly stuff my daughter does. I'm also thrilled by all the new fabric prints available. Sometimes I get ideas just from looking at fabric. I love vintage and reproduction fabrics and I love to mix them with modern elements.

What techniques do you use?
I've been stuck on applique for a few years now. Just like photography, it's a very involved process that requires a lot of steps. I use that time ironing and cutting and then ironing again to think. I have a full-time job as a teacher and that kid I mentioned before so I need some downtime.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart? I've been moving away from applique into creating my own designs for kids. I should have a few pinafores for toddler girls available will be taking custom orders.

What is your craft all about?
We create and self-publish original art and storytelling for the comic strip, Curls, and the comic books, Kid Roxy, Black Magic Tales, and The Legettes. We also have illustrated greeting cards, notebooks, handmade plush dolls, and other merchandise that feature Curls Studio's stable of characters.

How did you get started in your craft?
Curls Studio started doing craft shows last year and also participates in comic book conventions such as New York Comic Con, Baltimore Comic-Con, and Small Press Expo. We started because we wanted to share the characters we create and develop with the world.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I am inspired by merging many art disciplines such as photography, design, illustration, animation, and filmmaking into one creative mass that tells a story.

What techniques do you use?
My best ideas come from my brain and then are transferred to my hand onto paper with the aid of a pen or pencil. From there they can go on to be stuffed dolls, comics, greeting cards, or anything else we'd like to create.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
We are very proud of our latest 36 page comic book, The Legettes. It's a futuristic burlesque tale in a universe where analog and digital are at constant battle.

What is your craft all about?
de*nada is an emerging accessories line, specializing in handmade knits for women and men. The word itself commonly means, “you’re welcome” in Spanish.

How did you get started in your craft?
When I created de*nada, it happened naturally that I started off designing handbags and t-shirts, which later led to designing knit accessories. Since I studied fiber art in college, the design process for knits came to me a lot more organically than designing handbags for example. What is your craft all about?
We create the finest knit custom goods, with our main focus (especially this time of year) being Christmas Stockings. We focus on making heirloom quality products that can be passed down from generation to generation. We also produce beautiful stationery and sewn items, such as custom fabric flowers, and die cut notecard sets.

How did you get started in your craft?
Wow, we've been knitting since we can remember! My grandmother taught my mom, and my mom taught me. We come from a family of knitters, and we're happy to carry on the tradition as a mother and daughter business. We've had the business for 10 years.

I really love them all. I think the fabric flowers are my favorites, but maybe only because they are the newest!

Vendor Q&A with Natty Paint

How did you get started in your craft?
Natty Paint is the product of years of painting and fine arts training, combined with my interests in fashion and the music world. I started painting on clothing with puffy paints and spray paints in high school, and continued throughout college. The first official Natty Paint shirt was created in December 2008 as a Christmas gift for my roommate. It was a sweatshirt handpainted with puffy paints, based off a collage I had pasted together from various magazines and design books, and then projected onto the back of the sweatshirt. During my free time in my spring semester senior year in college, I learned the process of silkscreening in order to be able to produce many shirts in the same amount of time it took for me to handpaint one.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I am inspired by electronic musicians, it seems bright colors and geometric forms are popular in with this music genre. I also look at art from the 70s and 80s for inspiration, as well as the Art Nouveau and Art Deco periods.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
I am very excited about the silkscreen vintage clothing I have recently started to sell. It's chic and sustainable at the same time!

What is your craft all about?My one-of-a-kind clothing, handbags, and accessories are made using primarily reclaimed and vintage materials. Each piece is made with an original B-KAO pattern and is constructed with care and attention to detail.

How did you get started in your craft?
I taught myself how to sew at a very young age because I liked figuring out how to construct things. About ten years ago, I started sewing more seriously, which led to selling clothing and handbags in independently owned brick and mortar stores and online retail shops.

What inspires you to make what you make?Colors, textures and patterns all inspire me to create things. Once I see something interesting, I immediately know what I want to make with it.

Vendor Q&A with Chaya Tile Works & Pottery

How did you get started in your craft?
I took my first pottery class in 1996, where I learned primarily to throw on the wheel. Since then I have taken a tile-making class at the Corcoran School of Art. My current focus is hand-building and tile-making.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I am inspired by the arts and crafts tradition, my Jewish heritage, as well as patterns I find in nature.

What techniques do you use?
Some of my functional pottery is made by rolling out slabs of clay and pressing or adding texture to the clay before forming it into its final shape. I create other forms using the pinch pot technique.

My tile making process begins with a single pattern, which I carve into plaster. I press clay into the carved design to create a prototype. This is then used to make a second mold. Once this mold is dry, I press clay in to make the finished tiles. I usually glaze my pieces in a single color to emphasize the beauty of the design.

Vendor Q&A with Oh Ginger

What is your craft all about?
My craft extends far beyond Oh Ginger and includes my desire to make the things I need above and beyond mainstream consuming. The crafts I design for Oh Ginger use interesting textures, vintage ephemera, bold and exciting colors and affordable materials. The crafts I create in my day to day life run the gamut from curtains to cookies. Both facets of my crafting life are full of fun, simplicity, and whimsy.

How did you get started in your craft?
Though my my mother and grandmother are the root of my crafting abilities, two years ago I sprained my ankle and was sidelined on the sofa for the 4th of July weekend. A few weeks prior, I learned about Etsy through a coworker and was amazed at the abundant creativity and craftiness. I pulled out some old supplies that I hadn't touched in years and began making. I haven't stopped since.

Where has your craft taken you?
Far, far beyond anything I ever imagined, to be honest. It's brought me closer to my peers in ways I never dreamed possible. It has made the relationship between my mom and I even closer. Crafting is magical. Through it I've been able to make a ton of new friends, I started my blog (http://www.queeringdomesticity.com) and I also helped start the nation's only queer craft group, the Queer Crafter Collective (http://www.queercraftercollective.com). Perhaps the most significant lesson I've learned from craft is that, like most things, it intersects with so many other facets of the human experience - crafting is political, personal and all about community.

First up, we're excited to present our Q&A with local designer, Jeffrey Everett, of El Jefe Design:

What is your craft all about?
We create hand made screen prints for local and national touring bands. They are all limited edition on archival paper. We also do clothing and art prints.

How did you get started in your craft?
I started four years ago and got started by taking a class on screen printing while in NYC. I need something to print so I started hitting up bands - posters for free tickets. It snowballed from there.

What inspires you to make what you make?
I get inspired by all my great friends and family and want to help out bands that I respect.

What techniques do you use?
Screen printing is the number one when it comes to finished products but we start out doing pencil sketches before moving to the computer to finish everything for print.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
I am really excited about our Gaslight Anthem posters as well prints for DEVO, M. Ward, Soulsavers, and series for The Raveonettes.

Where has your craft taken you?
I have been able to get into galleries and exhibits, see my work in magazines, lecture at schools and awesome summits, and get to hang out with bands I like. I am very lucky to be doing what I am doing.

The Handmade Mart is super excited to be teaming up with Downtown Silver Spring and the FRESHFARM Market for the first annual Holiday Shop-n-Stroll!

This one-day, outdoor, holiday extravaganza will feature 50+ independent crafters, local farmers selling fresh seasonal produce, workshops, carolers, a tree lighting, and much more to get everyone into the holiday swing of things.

We are now accepting vendor applications for crafters to participate in this unique shopping experience along the bustling Ellsworth Drive in Downtown Silver Spring.

The Handmade Mart is a juried craft show. If you’d like to be a vendor, please download the application, and send it to us along with three photos of your craft. The deadline to apply is October 19th. Vendors will be selected based on quality and uniqueness of their craft.

There is no fee to apply, but all accepted vendors will need to pay a $65 booth fee + an additional fee if electricity is needed. More information can be found on our FAQ page.

Q&A with Craftgasm

What is your craft all about?
{craftgasm} is a way to show reclaimed materials in a new light. People are usually surprised when I tell them that their notecard used to be part of an advertisement, or that the envelope they're holding really was a road map at one point. They think I went out and bought these brand new materials to make stuff. I don't. Everything's been saved from its fate at the landfill, where it would just junk up the planet. Now it's able to be mailed off to brighten a friend's day.

What inspires you to make what you make?

I like rescuing pretty papers and items with a history. Every so often I promise myself that I won't bring any more paper into the house, but then a pile of vintage file folders calls my name from my office's recycling bin, and their pre-printed text and gorgeously faded inks entice me to carry them home and tuck them away, magpie-like.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

My favorite item I'll have at the Handmade Mart is the Reclaimed & Upcycled Stationery Sets. They consist of envelopes made out of old maps, blueprints, and plans, with sheets of saved-from-the-landfill mix and match paper that fold in half to slip inside each envelope. The papers themselves are gridded pages from architects' plans, lined papers from student notebooks, and blank colored pages from office carbon copies. They're so fun to make and assemble because no two sets are alike.

The Pyramid Atlantic Art Center has been a integral part of the Handmade Mart. Pyramid Atlantic is a huge supporter of the local arts community, and they will be hosting a series of workshops all day long at the Pyramid Atlantic Store during the Mart.

In the Pyramid Atlantic store (924 Ellsworth Drive), they will be providing workshops in jewelry making, screenprinting and papermaking. Vendors from their store will be selling handmade goods on the plaza. Their vendors include Linda Blackbourn from AZ Design, Annette Florin from Frou Frou A Go Go and Mary Westley from Jest 4 Ewe, among others.

Q&A with TurningPointe Press

What is your craft all about?

My artist books tend to be autobiographical, touching on universal themes that we experience in life. To keep things light, I simply love the whimsy and joy of my tutu series and inspiring quotes by famous dancers.

While I'm drawn to boxes as a metaphor for rich and layered psychological space, I love having access to beautiful things that are useful in everyday life. My daily journaling inspires the blank journals I create, as well.

What inspires you to make what you make?

My background as a dancer informs both content and form in my work. There is a certain delicacy to my work, made durable by the inner strength of solid and archival materials.

My passion for the book arts started with taking a papermaking workshop at Pyramid Atlantic. I tend to use handmade paper in most of my work - I love the translucency and crispness of abaca, the dance of long strands of kozo in a sheet, and delicate paste paper patterns.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

A miniature accordion book that transforms into a wearable tutu. I made the paper, sewed layers of tulle and used genuine pointe shoe ribbon from the same dancewear shop – Artistic Dance Fashions in Bethesda – that I got all of my pointe shoes from as a dancer.

What is your craft all about?

My work consists of mixed media collage, painting and photography. Imagery is a mix of realism, abstract shapes, vintage images & papers, handmade paper mixed with acrylics and wax. Many wall hangings are mounted on recycled wood as mini-prints or as larger pieces.

What inspires you to make what you make?

It's all about shape, color, texture, process, layers, design - elements combined to create visual interest. These things form an inspiration of sorts.

I just finished a series of original collages on canvas that I'm looking forward to showing.

Explain your band's name and how you formed.
We are students at the Paul Green School of Rock Music in Silver Spring. We are an audition-only band within the school and are selected by our Music Director Colin Behram.

What are your influences and worst equipment experiences?
We play classic rock covers and pick our music based on what we feel like playing at the time. Many of us play in our own bands where we perform original music as well.

What's your favorite local hangout and best stage you've played?
We really like playing at the Santa Fe Café in College Park but truth be told we love playing anywhere, anytime!

Bower Box: My favorite piece is my new card featuring a woodcut of 2 birds. This card is one in a series of 5 cards, all woodcuts with hand-set type printed on my antique letterpress.

Sweet Pepita: I'm bringing a ton of Spot-On, Dottie! Recycled Dresses
They're short-sleeved one-of-a-kind toddler a-line t-shirt dresses. Hand sewn from recycled fabric. We use 100% organic cotton for the trim as we find the combination of thick rib knit against soft recycled fabric irresistible!

They're named after Pepita's most favorite person, Miss Dot. On a quiet day you can hear sweet Pepita calling out the window, "Dot! Dot!" Who knew we'd be raising our own little Marlon Brando?

What is your craft all about?

Honoring my influences. My mom and gramma are my crafting role models, they've always helped and encouraged me. So this chickadee is really a way of thanking them by making the sorts of things that I grew up watching them make and use. It is lumpy batter of nostalgia mixed with necessity, with a teaspoon of tradition and a dash of something new.

What inspires you to make what you make?

The ladies mentioned above...their homes and the things that you'll find in them. Crafting itself is a constant inspiration. The craft apron came into being because I needed something to help me stay organized while sewing. The knitting project bags came to life as a way to tame my tangle of projects.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

It is so hard to say...probably the one that I make right before the show when I really should be focusing on something else but can't control myself. You'll have to stop by the booth to see what that turns out to be!

What is your craft all about?I'm interested in making cute stuff that's not snarky and not sickeningly sweet. Now that I have a kid of my own, I've realized just how difficult it is to find good outfits. I also try to have the best craftsmanship possible so that the pieces can be handed down to other kids and last a long time.

What inspires you to make what you make?

The Lemon Cadet designs are inspired by things I find in nature, vegetables that grow in the little garden beside our house and other silly things I come across. I'm also thrilled by the amazing fabrics that are available.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

I love these new rompers that I made. The little guys have huge bellies like my daughter and these crazy long swirly curly tails made from dotted swiss. I can't wait for people to see them.

What is your craft all about?

Quilting saved my sanity. I discovered my love of quilting during my second year of law school and without it I may not have survived! My craft is all about modern and fun design. I am passionate about my work and if I don't love it, I won't let it see the light of day. I am happiest when I'm making crafts with beautiful fabrics or taking something old and giving it new life. I would miss the law, but if I could sew all day, every day, I absolutely would!

What inspires you to make what you make?

Everything inspires me! I'm constantly thinking about patterns and colors and how I can mix each to be fun and different. I'm also inspired by other designers, quilters and crafters. I love to go to flea markets, yard sales and second hand stores to search for vintage and unique fabrics. My ultimate quilting inspiration is my nana. She hand quilts everything and I am constantly in awe. While our fabric choices are not the same, I love to take some of her tried and true patterns and renovate them into something more modern.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

My current favorite quilt is a very simple pink and green baby quilt made with amy butler fabric. Everytime I look at it I can't help but smile! It's currently hanging on my wall and I can't wait to bring it with me to Handmade Mart.

What is your craft all about?

I make graphic leather belts using a process for imbedding images into leather that I have spent the last four years developing. As for the art that goes on the belts... Everything from Zombies, to Dinosaurs eating Toast, to kick-ass plaid patterns. Basically whatever odd stories I tell myself at night.

What inspires you to make what you make?

I love love love the technical stuff. I love figuring out how to do new things, new processes. And I enjoy the process of making things by hand. Oh, and if I didn’t express my the art I have trapped in my brain-hole I think I might explode... Literally, gray-matter everywhere.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

Currently it's my pirate chefs series. A whole line of things with the pirate chefs insignia on it... Tees, belts, aprons, CHEFS HATS!!!

What is your craft all about?

Mostly I make baby toys with felted wool that I knit and felt myself. I love bold colors and basic shapes, soft rattle sounds, making babies happy, while using natural components in the process.

What inspires you to make what you make?

Absolutely, my son Nicholas. babus was his nickname before we decided on a name. I've always followed or tried to anticipate his interests and needs.

What is your craft all about?

We make all natural body care products free from synthetic fragrances, dyes and additives. They are purposeful, fun and full of quality ingredients. Our line of body care products include soaps, lip balm, bath soak, belly balm, body butter bars, body scrubs, gift sets and a lot more in the works!

What inspires you to make what you make?

Natural ingredients from Mother Nature inspire us. There are so many wonderful ingredients right in front of our nose. We are inspired to make natural products that are truly clean, beneficial and exciting to use. Customers inspire us too. We love to make people happy when they smell our body care goodies! The thought of brightening someone's day with a good bar of soap in their morning shower keeps us creating.

What is your craft all about?

I am a collage artist and I work with vintage pieces of ephemera... antique advertisments, vintage wall paper designs, old personal letters and sheet music and my own handpainted pieces and photographs. I intricately shape these pieces together to create a finished piece of art that is romantic, poetic and exotic with a vintage flair.

What inspires you to make what you make?

I am inspired by both the past and the future. I love old images... photographs, letters, ads, anything that gives me clues to what life was like many years ago. Antique stores are some of my favorite places!I am also greatly inspired by music and song lyrics. Often times, a specific short lyric will stick in my head for weeks and, one day, something will "click." I'll suddenly be able to feel like I can capture the beauty of the words in images.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

The pieces that I am most excited about showing at the Handmade Mart will be my newest line of stone tile drink coasters. I have developed a special transparent technique to apply my images to these naturally beautiful pieces of stone tile. This technique allows for the texture and character of the stone to be featured. I am proud to have created a line of home decor products that are beautiful, useful and durable.

What is your craft all about?

What inspires you to make what you make?

Herban Lifestyle-I love all things herbal and aromatherapeutic, and my craft allows me to be surrounded by them. It's a multi-sensorial experience -- sight, smell, touch and taste. And it's a lot like cooking, coming up with new recipes, but without any calories!

BeadJewelry by ShopGirl-I find inspiration in the creative process itself. The construction of a piece, what colors to play with, materials to use, techniques to combine, complex or simple, what textures to create especially if there is a visual and tactile contrast, all turn me on. Like a bracelet that may look stiff and heavy but is actually light, soft and drapes well on your wrist. I never know what my final piece will look like when I start something, so it’s like going on a journey every time I create.

Seeing people making amazing garments out of my yarns and telling me how much they love my colors is what keeps me dyeing! I've met so many awesome people just from hanging out at craft fairs and having my stuff out there - it's pretty neat!

Explain your band's name and how you formed.

I used to play just the black keys on the Wurlitzer and watch the fish in an aquarium in my room. When we first started it was more like dreamy "watching fish" music.

What are your influences and worst equipment experiences?

I like melodies. My first record was Sousa marches played by a calliope. We were at a skate park and it was dark setting up and I couldn't find any of my cords. I finally got one keyboard to work and Laura played beats while skaters were flying off a half pipe about 2 inches from my face.

What's your favorite local hangout and best stage you've played?

This time of year I hang out on my porch with some iced tea. I also love the Botanical Garden. I would love to play a show in the jungle room there.

Where can the adoring public see you next?

We just recorded two songs and hope to have them available very soon. Excited to play Handmade Mart! Hopefully we will get on a bill at Fort Reno this summer and a tour in August.

Q&A with The Devil Made Me Do It Clothing

What is your craft all about?

I started re-making clothes from vintage finds when I was a teenager and couldn’t find anything I wanted to wear at the mall. Back then, I loved looking through Vogue magazine and seeing all the crazy avant-guard hairdos and couture outfits. I thought regular people should look more like that. But I certainly couldn’t afford those kinds of clothes (I hadn’t ever even seen anyone real wear those kinds of clothes). So I started making (and wearing) my own “versions” from things I found at thrift stores. This certainly didn’t help me fit in at my small-town high school. Then, I went to college in NYC and (I’ll admit) became kind of a Clubkid. My friends and I used to make these crazy getups and go out dancing. Everyone stared and we loved it. It was all about exploring different personas and having fun with it. There’s definitely a flavor of that in my work now. It’s definitely for people who don’t mind being stared at. Not that I want to make things that are costume-y. But I still love the idea of dressing up and looking fabulous, while not taking any of it too seriously.

What inspires you to make what you make?
This is a BIG question. I think what inspires me to “make” is different from what inspires what I make (which is easier). I’ll admit my inspirations come much less from what’s in fashion and more from art, design, culture, and nature. Like all artists, everything I see during the day gets absorbed and added to the process. For instance, I absolutely love Hitchock films. Not just because they’re wonderful thrillers, but because they’re so carefully styled, especially the leading ladies (check out Kim Novak in Vertigo). I like to bring a touch of this vintage elegance to my work. But then that crashes into something like Steampunk. I just love it. Not that anything I design is meant to be specifically Steampunk, but I think many of my pieces have those sorts of flavors and influences. Victorian, alt. reality/fantasy, a bit tongue-and-cheek, and punk. What could be better?

What inspires me to “make”—in a larger sense—is wanting to be part of an alternative to mass-consumption (I could go on all day about the Handmade Movement), and wanting to go easy on the environment, which is why I use only reclaimed materials. But at the end of the day, it’s really about the sheer satisfaction of making something unique and wonderful, and putting it out into the world.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?
I just designed this crazy-beautiful (if I do say so myself) cashmere dress that I just adore (can you tell?). It’s a real showpiece and looks great on everyone. I hope to have one with me. I’m also doing some sweet little summer-weight embellished shirts. Just for fun.

At the Fiberworks Studio in The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria Virginia. I love tote bags that are unique and quirky. I go to the thrift store regularly for materials, and inspiration. I am also inspired by music from all genres.

I made a "Rain Coat Tote" out of an old raincoat I had. It is white with bright blue polka dots. It is water proof, and super cute.

Q&A with Yell County!

Explain your band's name and how you formed.

Joel:Yell County is a county in Arkansas where Joel grew up. We formed for the sheer hell of it, actually. That and somebody has to show people that there's still rock bands that aren't feckless sellout droogs.

Alex: Joel and I had a band in the late 80's (or was it early 90's) called Yellowcake. A few years ago, Joel and I started talking about playing again and the rest is history. I met Arthur through a friend. At the time Joel and I were looking for a new bassist. Arthur fit the bill perfectly.

Arthur: Yell County is this mythical place in Arkansas where Joel grew up. I don't get it, I think something is up. Every 3rd person we meet say they're from there. It's like all a big lie & the joke is on me. As far as I can tell, Joel & Alex have been playing music together since 1961 & had basically burned through every bass player in DC, it was only a matter of time until they got to me (and I'm burning now).

What are your influences and worst equipment experiences?

Joel: The Move, The Kinks, The Who, the Undertones, old black dudes with crappy guitars and Cold War numbers stations.

Alex: Mine are the drummers for what I call my big five: AC/DC, Aerosmith, Led Zepplin, Queen, and Deep Purple. I love the punk rock but my roots are really in 70's hard rock. Once I practiced with some guys by playing a broken hi-hat and a snare drum perched on top of a milk crate. Nothing gets in the way of the rock!

Arthur: Drugs. And the time I sold my equipment for drugs.

What's your favorite local hangout and best stage you've played?

Joel: My house. The old 9:30 Club.

Alex: Right now my favorite hang out is probably the Quarry House in Silver Spring. CBGB's. There was so much history and sweat on that stage and in that sound system. That place was like Mecca to me.

Arthur: Java Shack in Arlington. But now that Murky Coffee has closed the self important are slowly finding their way there, all noblesse and no oblige they are.

What is your craft all about?

Rebound Designs is all about the rescue and transformation of unwanted and damaged books. I take old hardbacks and turn them into beautiful, one of a kind purses, while damaged paperbacks are made into durable, vinyl covered wallets for men and women.

What inspires you to make what you make?

I've always been inspired by the things people throw away or forget about. I used to work at a used book store, and the sheer number of books we had to toss, or that sat on the shelves unwanted for years was staggering. Libraries throw away hundreds of books every year! By remaking unwanted books, I am preserving their beauty and giving them a new life with a new function, while still promoting a love of literature.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

That's a hard question, it's like trying to pick a favorite book! Actually, my favorite book is easy, it's The Lord of the Rings, and I'm sure to have some wallets made from the trilogy. Custom orders are always welcomed, if you have a favorite book!

What is your craft all about? For me, pottery is about discovering beauty in both classical flowing contours, and organic shapes and surfaces. Playing with the clay - even to make a simple bowl or cup - is about feeling the clay and responding to it, as if it's an extension of your hands. It's a good feeling.

What inspires you to make what you make?

Some of my inspiration comes from things I observe in nature - lava flows or treebark or insects. But I also like to keep some aspect of functionality in everything, and sometimes a bowl is just a bowl. And there are many potters out there with such creative minds, they are always a source of steady inspiration too.

I try not to get too attached to the things I make, but my favorite will be a set of simple porcelain pitchers.

Meet The Floating Lab Collective

The Floating Lab Collective will be at the Handmade Mart with their Floating Museum, to host a one-of-a-kind traveling art series that transforms any space into an accessible, interactive gallery of art.

FLC is a group of metropolitan DC-based artists working collectively on performances, media art and research. The main idea is to expand the space of art into public space and to expand the discourse about contemporary art. The participating artists are a dynamic and flexible group that expands and contracts in size depending on the piece to be executed.

The pieces they create are labeled as experiments, and focus on different aspects of our society (political, economic, social, etc...). During the Handmade Mart, their art will explore “economy” and “reciprocity” and the ways these ideas affect our relationships to objects and each other.

The Floating Lab Collective will be at the Handmade Mart all day. Check them out at their Floating Museum truck which will be parked at the Fenton Avenue and Ellsworth Drive intersection.

Pash is Australian slang for making out. Erik and I met in college. I had a crush on him and we started a band together. It didn't work out between us in that way.

What are your influences and worst equipment experiences?

Our influences collectively are Dismemberment Plan and 90's alt rock but we all have different individual influences. I think every show we have a band equipment experience! haha

What's your favorite local hangout and best stage you've played?

Sticky Rice! Erik and Ryan work there. Black Cat is always fun to go to. The best stage is anyone that has a lot of room for us to move around.

What is your craft all about?

I have always made things from existing materials, I believe that there is value in everything in our lives and try to reuse everything that I can. Creating wearable art using an item that has little value after a few years is very appealing to me.

What is your craft all about?

I'm an artist specializing in all things cute, bright and often very silly.

What inspires you to make what you make?

I have an art-related day job, but it's generally pretty dreary, so I love to come home and paint bright, happy paintings. If they make me laugh, that's a big plus. I keep a little notebook of ideas for my tiny paintings and I love imagining what a stranger would think of it if they found it on the street: it's full of cryptic lists like "donkey eating waffle, duck with monocle, ambitious squid."

What is your craft all about?

I design and construct clothing, handbags and accessories that are made for everyday life. My unique wares are both durable and functional. I also craft magnets and jewelry for fun, but the constants throughout the years have always been clothing and handbags.

What inspires you to make what you make?

Colors, textures and patterns all inspire me to create things. Once I see something interesting, I immediately know what I want to make with it.

What is your craft all about?

Exposing the beauty in the every day that are often unappreciated and try to compose them in a fun and edgy way....birds on a wire, braille, shark teeth found on the chesapeake bay in maryland...glitter for bird poop on my merde cards ;), etc.

What inspires you to make what you make?
Everything. From nature to the man made. And then translate it so it’s percieved in a new way. For example braille... It’s in every public building/area... Which seems a little ironic in a way that we overlook it. I’ve in turn used it in sterling pendants and note cards with little messages such as “loved”, “nerd” , “peace” Secret tactile reminders to smile.

What is your craft all about?

I make glass jewelry and plates for fiber lovers. I also produce wool batts and bumps for spinning and felting, as well as handspun yarn and handdyed yarn for knitting.

What inspires you to make what you make?

For my jewelry, I draw inspiration from the passion of fiber lovers; that's why I choose to work with images (in silver or copper) of furry animals. For my plates, I look to the works of quilters; I translate their quilt design into glass.

What is your craft all about?

I create limited edition, hand done, screen printed posters for bands as well as art prints. My subjects range from cute dragons to half-naked luchadores to arty-looking stuff.

What inspires you to make what you make?

I have always loved making posters and was inspired by artists like Edward Gorey, Mucha, and Steingold. I love the idea of working BIG and getting in small jokes and details that take repeat viewing to get.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at theHandmade Mart?

I love each piece we do like a new born baby. If I had to pick one, it would need to be the Flight of the Conchords poster I just did for their show in DC. The poster depicts Albi the Racist Dragon discovering his jelly bean tear drops and not becoming racist anymore. Perfect for any kid's room.

What is your craft all about?

I really wanted a sterling silver chain that I could wear on its own and couldn't find one, so started experimenting myself and this curiosity has developed into an entire line of jewelry.

What inspires you to make what you make?

The wire inspires me. I love pushing the wire - like doodling - to see what works and what doesn't. Lots of experimenting.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

My favorite will always be my chains.

What is your craft all about?

I make jewelry with a whimsical vibe and a philosophy of sustainability.

What inspires you to make what you make?

I'm inspired by the icons of childhood--pinwheels, paper airplanes, jacks, and other playthings. I also love folding and mixing metals.

What is your craft all about?

My note cards and journals are made with upcycled magazines or books being discarded from local libraries. I am a crafty dumpster diver! These books are being tossed because they have been written in or are ripped up or often just because they are just outdated. I am a kindergarten teacher and one day was walking past the dumpster at the public library and saw stacks and stacks of books in their trash. My heart nearly jumped out of my chest. I went inside and asked if I could crawl into their dumpster and pull the books out. They thought I was crazy, but I figured I could surely find a better use for the books than the trash. Now I hit up all the local public libraries on a regular basis and crawl through their trash. At first I just gave my books and cards to friends, but then they convinced me to start selling them. I adore making my paper goods; I sit and giggle the entire time at the old illustrations and wording of things.

What inspires you to make what you make?

As a true southern girl, I was raised to revere the art of letter-writing. I'm sad to see this art dying off with the onset of technology and hope that my cards inspire you to drop someone a note. What is more fun or exciting than real mail in your box when you arrive home from work!?! In addition, I am a self reflection junkie. I can't help but pick up a neat journal when I see one. I hope that my journals inspire people to do a little self reflecting of their own- put your own thoughts to paper! I also love my work because I feel like I am rescuing these works from a sad death in the trash. Lastly, I simply adore paper!

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

I just got a fabulous vintage Cinderella book out of the dumpster at the library this weekend, the journals that I've started on are just gorgeous! I almost want to keep them for myself.

What is your craft all about?

The Guestroom Closet is a team of three crafters and we make an array of items. From reusable snack bags and napkins made from vintage fabric, to baby barrettes and toddler bows, to personalized burp cloths and diaper totes - we got gifts covered.

What inspires you to make what you make?

We're inspired by lots of things! Here are a few, in no particular order: Our own kids, vintage linens, cold beer, piles of pretty ribbons, organized craft closets, and lovely party dresses.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

Our lunch pack, made from rescued vintage fabric! It includes a set of cloth napkins and two reusable and washable snack bags - just perfect for your lunchbox or picnic basket.

What is your craft all about?

Unique handmade stylish clothes, influenced by Asian designs.

What inspires you to make what you make?

My friends' children inspired me to make cosmopolitan and practical clothes, guided by the belief that children's clothes could be stylish and imaginative.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

My dresses for young girls and my embroidered t-shirts.

What is your craft all about?

My craft is about combining some of my favorite techniques into one outlet. When I make my jewelery and art, I incorporate elements of printing, carving, sculpting and painting. I create my own stamps from original drawings and use them to create texture in the clay. I then use paint to add color, texture and dimension. Finally I strategically distress them to give them my signature look.

What inspires you to make what you make?

I am inspired by just about everything around me. I get a lot of ideas from nature, but I'm also inspired by the textures, lines and contrasts found in everyday life. I can also get inspiration from a song lyric or a funny saying, it just depends on what strikes me at the moment. I am fascinated by artistic inspiration, so I blog about what inspires me and my work on a fairly regular basis. http://blockpartypress.blogspot.com

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

My favorite items right now are in my new necklace series called "Out on a Limb". They feature a branch with different items dangling. Each one has a special meaning and all of the latest additions to series were inspired by Spring.

What is your craft all about?

For some reason I have always been drawn to fabric and sewing. I work with fabric like painters paint. I am obsessed with it's color, pattern & texture and how you can manipulate it with layering, stitching & embellishing. It's my addiction.

What inspires you to make what you make?

The desire to wear beautiful and unusual things. To be different. I get inspiration by all aspects of the design world, it could be a sofa, a painting, a dress, anything with color & pattern.

What is your favorite piece/product you will have with you at the Handmade Mart?

Some sort of funky handbag, most likely with polka dots.
